Homecare assistant aides help care for physically or mentally ill, injured, disabled or infirm individuals who are confined to their homes or living in residential care facilities. They help with personal care, meal preparation, administering medications, and providing emotional support to clients.

The jobs are low-paying, and family and friends provide the majority of the aide's income. As a result, many home care aides work several jobs to make ends meet.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median wage for a home care worker is $11.22 per hour. The median annual income for a homemaker is $17,080, and the median annual income for a personal care aide is $18,030.

That's part of what has caused the program to be popular in recent years. About 55,000 people are waiting for home care aide training slots, according to CDEP.

With the addition of the Colorado apprenticeship, CareCTL will recruit up to 100 people, but they're still looking for more people to sign up. Interested candidates can visit CARECTL's website at CareCTL.org. They can also download an application and attend an orientation and job readiness workshop for potential participants.

CareCTL's website also offers details about the training program and contacts to get questions answered, should anyone have any.

Bronco County Commissioner Maggie Hart Stebbins had expressed interest in getting involved in the program for a while now, and was glad to see it come to fruition.

"I'm pleased to see that we can have a pilot program to get this started and bring it to Bozeman," Stebbins said.

Those interested in learning more about the program can email Stebbins at mhstebbins@bozeman.org.
